Sith Name Generator

The Sith naming formula is remarkably consistent: the title Darth followed by a single coined name. What makes the good ones work is that each buries a real word in plain sight. Vader invokes invader, Sidious hides insidious, Tyranus carries tyrant, Plagueis suggests plague, and Malus and Malak lean on the Latin root for evil. The name is dark poetry compressed into a title.

To build one, start from the concept your Sith embodies — ruin, fear, void, betrayal, hunger, night — and distort the word until it sounds ancient and pronounceable. This generator does exactly that, pairing the Darth title with coined names built on dark roots.

In canon the Darth title and its accompanying name are given by a Sith master to their apprentice, and the choice is deliberate: it reflects what the apprentice embodies or is destined to become. Unlike the Jedi, who keep their birth names for life, the Sith shed theirs entirely. Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader, and the renaming is the fall made literal.

This is the most useful thing to know when naming a Sith character. The name should be a judgement passed on them by someone else — which means it can be crueller, more specific, and more revealing than anything a character would choose for themselves.

The Darth title carries genuine standing. A Sith without it sits roughly at the level of a Jedi Knight, while a Sith who bears it is closer to a Jedi Master, with Dark Lord of the Sith as the highest known rank. It is not a decoration every dark side user may wear — Kylo Ren, for all his red blade and Sith trappings, never follows Sith precepts and so never holds the title.

It is also worth knowing the Rule of Two, established by Darth Bane roughly a millennium before the films after the Sith nearly destroyed themselves through infighting: one master and one apprentice, no more. If your story is set under that rule, there should be exactly two Darths alive at a time.
