Jedi Name Generator
A Jedi keeps the name they were born with. Unlike the Sith, the Order does not hand out new identities — a Jedi's rank is a title, not a renaming. This generator builds names in the register the films and novels use for Force-users of the Republic: dignified, often hyphenated, and paired with a short surname.

01
How Jedi names are built
The Jedi naming register is quietly consistent: a given name that often runs to two elements — frequently hyphenated, as with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon — followed by a short, clean surname. The overall effect is dignified but restrained, with none of the theatrical menace of Sith naming. Names among Force-users of the High Republic era such as Avar Kriss, Stellan Gios, and Keeve Trennis show the same balance.
This generator pairs given names in that style with short surnames, producing new names rather than reusing existing characters. The important structural point is that the name is a birth name: it is who the Jedi already was.
02
Rank is a title, not a new name
This is the key difference from the Sith. A Jedi progresses from Padawan to Knight to Master, and those ranks are titles placed before the existing name — Master Yoda, Knight Skywalker. Nothing about advancement replaces who the person was. The Order's naming reflects its values: continuity, humility, and a self that persists rather than being burned away and rebuilt.
So if you want to show a Jedi's standing, add the rank rather than changing the name. A character called Master Kaela Trennis reads instantly as senior, without a single letter of her name having changed since she was a youngling.
03
When a Jedi does change their name
There are exceptions, and they are always meaningful. A Jedi who goes into hiding may take an alias, as when Caleb Dume lived as Kanan Jarrus after the Order's fall. A Jedi who falls to the dark side and becomes Sith is given an entirely new identity by their master, which is why Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader — the renaming is the point of the fall.
That makes a name change a genuine story beat for a Jedi character. Because the Order does not rename people as a matter of course, any Jedi who takes a new name is telling you something has gone badly wrong, or badly right.
Notable names
- Obi-Wan Kenobi
- The classic Jedi form: a hyphenated given name and a short surname, kept for life.
- Qui-Gon Jinn
- Another hyphenated given name; both are addressed by rank rather than a new name.
- Kanan Jarrus
- Born Caleb Dume; a rare Jedi name change, taken as an alias while hiding after the Order fell.
Tips
- Keep the birth name — Jedi rank is a title placed in front, not a renaming.
- A hyphenated two-part given name reads as instantly Jedi.
- Pair a longer given name with a short, clean surname for the usual balance.
- Use a name change only as a story beat: an alias in hiding, or a fall to the dark side.

FAQ
What makes a name sound like a Jedi's?
A dignified given name, often hyphenated into two elements as with Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon, paired with a short surname. The tone is restrained rather than theatrical.
Do Jedi get new names when they become Knights or Masters?
No. Padawan, Knight, and Master are titles placed before the existing name. Unlike the Sith, the Jedi Order does not replace a person's identity as they advance.
Why did some Jedi change their names?
Only under exceptional circumstances — Caleb Dume took the alias Kanan Jarrus while hiding after the Order fell, and a Jedi who falls to the dark side is given a wholly new Sith identity by their master.
Are these Jedi names free to use?
The names generated here are new, built to follow the observed conventions rather than copied from existing characters. Star Wars itself is Lucasfilm's, so keep fan work non-commercial.
