Dunmer Name Generator

Dunmer names are short, sharp, and unmistakably Morrowind — two clipped syllables with a hard edge, quite unlike the flowing names of other elves. This generator follows the documented Dunmer pattern so results sit naturally alongside the dark elves of Vvardenfell and Skyrim.

01

How Dunmer names are built

Dunmer given names are notably compact. Most run to two syllables and around five or six letters, which is what gives them their clipped, businesslike quality next to the long melodic names of the Altmer. The letter v appears very frequently, especially in male names, and a great many Dunmer names end in -yn or -yne or a close variation.

This generator builds to that documented pattern rather than copying existing characters, so results are new names that follow the real Dunmer shape. Keeping the name short is the single most important thing: a long, flowing name reads as high elf, not dark elf.

02

Great Houses and family names

Unlike Argonians, Dunmer do carry family names, and in Morrowind those families are organised into Great Houses — Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni, Indoril, and Dres — each with its own character, politics, and territory. A Dunmer's family name places them in that structure, and House allegiance drives much of Morrowind's story.

For a full name, pair a generated given name with a House-style family name. The choice does real characterisation: House Telvanni suggests a reclusive wizard, House Redoran a warrior of honour, House Hlaalu a trader with an eye for advantage.

03

Great House Dunmer and Ashlanders

There are two broad Dunmer naming traditions, and they mark a real cultural divide. The settled Dunmer of the Great Houses, who followed the Tribunal, carry the compact names described above. The Ashlanders — nomadic Dunmer of the wastes who kept to the older Daedric worship — follow their own conventions, and their names are recognisably distinct from the House Dunmer of the cities.

If your character is a nomad rather than a city-dweller, that difference is worth honouring. A House name on an Ashlander would be a contradiction, since the whole point of the Ashlanders is that they rejected the House system.

Notable names

Vivec
One of the Tribunal, Morrowind's living gods; a short, hard Dunmer name in the classic mould.
Nerevar
The ancient Chimer lord whose legend drives Morrowind's main quest.
Divayth Fyr
A Telvanni wizard; shows the given name plus family name structure with the characteristic v.

Tips

  • Keep it short — two syllables and five or six letters is the Dunmer norm.
  • Use a v somewhere, especially for male names; it is strikingly common.
  • The -yn and -yne endings are among the most recognisably Dunmer.
  • Add a Great House family name for a settled Dunmer, but never for an Ashlander.

FAQ

What makes a name sound Dunmer?

Compactness. Most Dunmer names run to two syllables and about five or six letters, frequently contain a v, and often end in -yn or -yne. Long flowing names read as Altmer instead.

What are the Dunmer Great Houses?

Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni, Indoril, and Dres. A Dunmer's family name places them within this structure, and House allegiance shapes much of Morrowind's politics and story.

Are Ashlander names different?

Yes. The nomadic Ashlanders kept to older Daedric traditions rather than the Tribunal, and their naming follows its own conventions. An Ashlander would not carry a Great House family name.

Are these Dunmer names free to use?

The names generated here are new, built to follow the documented conventions rather than copied from existing characters. The Elder Scrolls setting itself is Bethesda's, so keep fan work non-commercial.
