Altmer Name Generator

Altmer names are long, melodic, and self-consciously refined — the naming of a people who consider themselves the oldest and highest civilisation in Tamriel. This generator builds names in that Summerset register, flowing and formal, and long enough to carry the weight the Altmer think they deserve.

01

How Altmer names are built

Altmer naming is the most overtly elvish in The Elder Scrolls, and it shows a clear debt to Tolkien's elven languages: flowing vowels, soft consonants, and liquid endings such as -wen, -riil, -nwe, and -lian. Names run considerably longer than those of the Dunmer, and the whole effect is deliberately melodic and formal.

This generator assembles new names to that pattern rather than reusing existing characters. The key contrast to hold onto is length — a Dunmer name is short and clipped, while an Altmer name flows. If a name sounds like it wants to be sung, it is Altmer.

02

Long lineages and hidden surnames

The Altmer place enormous value on family and heritage, and their full names run very long as a result, encoding a great deal of ancestry. In practice most Altmer do not display those full names to outsiders, which is why the high elves encountered across Tamriel usually go by a single given name — the rest is there, simply not offered.

That gives you a nice piece of characterisation. An Altmer who states their full lineage to a stranger is making a point about status; one who gives only a given name is either being discreet or does not consider the listener worth the recitation.

03

Altmer and Bosmer

Bosmer, the wood elves, share the same broad elvish sound-world but tend toward shorter and easier names, often ending in -ir, -or, or -in for men and -el or -il for women. The two are related registers rather than identical ones, and Bosmer names generally sit lighter on the tongue.

If you are naming a wood elf rather than a high elf, keep the melody but shorten the name. If you are naming an Altmer, let it run long — the length is part of how the Altmer signal who they are.

Notable names

Elenwen
The Thalmor emissary in Skyrim; a flowing Altmer name with the characteristic -wen ending.
Ancano
The Thalmor advisor at the College of Winterhold, showing the smoother Altmer register.

Tips

  • Let Altmer names run long — length is part of how they signal status.
  • Keep every consonant soft; a hard stop breaks the Altmer register immediately.
  • Endings like -wen, -riil, -nwe, and -lian read as unmistakably high elven.
  • For a Bosmer instead, keep the melody but shorten the name considerably.

FAQ

What makes a name sound Altmer?

Length and melody. Altmer names flow with soft consonants and liquid endings such as -wen and -riil, and run notably longer than the short, clipped names of the Dunmer.

Why do Altmer rarely use surnames?

Altmer value lineage highly and their full names run very long as a result, but most do not display them to outsiders. Giving only a given name is the norm rather than an absence of one.

What is the difference between Altmer and Bosmer names?

They share an elvish sound-world, but Bosmer names are shorter and easier to say, often ending in -ir, -or, or -in for men and -el or -il for women.

Are these Altmer names free to use?

The names generated here are new, built to follow the documented conventions rather than copied from existing characters. The Elder Scrolls setting itself is Bethesda's, so keep fan work non-commercial.
