Troll Name Generator

Troll naming is all mass. The sounds are guttural and heavy — gr, thr, dr, hard g and k, thick vowels — and the names lumber where an orc name snaps. Trolls come out of Norse and Scandinavian folklore, where they were giants and mountain-dwellers, and that heritage gives the names their thick, rolling, saga-like quality.

This generator stacks heavy onsets with blunt, growling endings so the output reads as big and slow. Trolls are rarely subtle creatures, and their names should not be either — every syllable is meant to sound like it weighs something.

Troll folklore splits by habitat, and the sound can follow. A cave or mountain troll takes the heaviest, most guttural name; a bridge troll of the fairy-tale sort might carry something slightly more folkloric and grumbling. Trolls are usually solitary or found in small, brutish family groups rather than the war-tribes of orcs, so they rarely need clan names — a single heavy name does the job.

For a group of trolls, generate a few big blunt names and let their sheer weight distinguish them; trolls do not organise, so you need less naming structure than you would for an orc warband.

A troll is usually a set-piece monster rather than one of a crowd, so its name can afford to be memorable and a little characterful. A heavy, growling name does a lot of the work of making a troll feel like a slow, dangerous obstacle rather than just another brute.

Generate a few and keep the one whose weight you can hear, then let the party learn it right before it swings.
