Cats can learn their names, and some name shapes are commonly said to work better than others. The usual advice is to keep it to one or two syllables and to favour bright, high vowel sounds — particularly names ending in an ee sound — since cats hear higher frequencies well and those endings carry when called. A short name is also simply easier to repeat consistently, which is most of how any animal learns a word.

The other common recommendation is to avoid names that sound like words you use for other purposes. A cat called Kit will struggle if you also say sit, and a name too close to no or a family member's name creates confusion. Pick something that occupies its own sound-space in the household.

There is a long tradition of giving cats grand, absurd, or aristocratic names — the Sir Reginalds and Baroness Beans of the world — and it survives because it is genuinely funny and costs nothing. What actually happens is that the formal name lives on the vet's records and in introductions, while daily use collapses it to one or two syllables.

Knowing this in advance is useful. If you want a grand name, choose one whose short form you also like, since the short form is the name you will say ten thousand times. A Bartholomew who becomes Bart is fine; one who becomes Barty when you hate Barty is a small daily irritation.

It is usually worth waiting a few days before committing. Cats arrive with personalities already installed, and a name chosen before you have met the animal often fits worse than one chosen after. Many people end up naming for a habit, a marking, or a specific absurdity that only became apparent once the cat was home.

For multiple cats, avoid names that sound alike. Two cats called Milo and Mylo will both respond to both, or neither, and calling one across a room becomes a coin toss. Give each a distinct opening consonant and you will save yourself years of confusion.
